About

About Us

We are a member of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. We are part of the Mid-South District.

In 1918 several local Lutheran families banded together with pastors from Zion Lutheran Church of Augsburg serving them in local homes.
In 1923 five families formally organized as First Lutheran Church of Russellville. On December 9, 1923 the First Evangelical Lutheran Church on the corner of Second Street and El Paso was dedicated to the service of the Triune God.
In 1940 the congregation outgrew and sold their church property. Services were held in the American Legion Hut. During the week meetings were held in homes.
In 1947 the congregation purchased property at the corner or Third Street and Boulder Avenue with ground breaking in 1948.
Growth relocation again occurred in 1973 to North Yuma Avenue [renamed North Cumberland for 911 purposes]. This is the current location of St. John’s Lutheran Church for our service to the Triune God.

The Five Solas of the Reformation

1. Faith Alone

Sola Fide means we are saved by faith alone.

2. Christ Alone

Sola Christo means that saving faith is in Christ alone.

3. Grace Alone

Sola Gratia means we are saved through God’s grace alone.

4. Scripture Alone

Sola Scriptura means we rely on Holy Scripture (The Bible) as the highest authority.

5. Glory to God Alone

Solo Deo Gloria means that everything is for the Glory of God alone.
Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum

“The grass withers, and the flower falls,
but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

An Outsider Talks With a Lutheran Theologian (What do Lutherans Believe?)

What do Lutherans believe? I wanted to know, so I visited a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church (LCMS) where I met with Pastor Will Weedon who explained what Lutherans believe and how they’re different from Calvinists and Roman Catholics.

Here’s the previous video with Will at a Lutheran Church: https://youtu.be/99fmOmlcF0c
